Common questions

How do I know the gutters need attention?

Water spilling over the edge in rain, gutters sagging or pulling away from the building, leaks at the corners and joints, stains or peeling paint on the siding below, and water pooling by the foundation all point the same way.

Why do downspouts matter?

A gutter only collects the water. The downspout decides where it goes, and one that ends against the foundation undoes the work of the gutter above it, so placement and drainage are part of doing gutters properly.

Do you work on commercial gutters?

Yes. A commercial building usually means a longer run and a larger volume of water in a hard rain, with drainage that has to go somewhere specific rather than just onto a lawn, so the sizing and the plan are worked out for the building rather than assumed from a standard house setup.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

It depends on what is over the roof. A house under trees, especially pines or anything that drops needles or seed pods, needs attention more often than a house in the open. Watching for water spilling over the edge during rain is a better signal than a fixed schedule either way.

How can I tell a gutter problem from a roof problem?

Water stains on the fascia board or on the siding just below the roofline can come from either one, and telling them apart from the ground is not always possible. If the gutters are clear and still overflowing, or leaking at a seam, that points to the gutter itself; if water is showing up further down the wall or inside the house, the roof or the flashing above the gutter is worth checking too.

Do gutter guards remove the need for cleaning?

They cut down on debris getting in, not eliminate it entirely, and they can hide a developing problem if nobody checks behind them occasionally. They reduce the maintenance, they do not replace ever looking at the system.

Can gutters be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. A sagging section, a loose seam or a damaged length can usually be fixed without replacing the whole run, unless the system as a whole has reached the end of its life or was sized wrong from the start.
